agno handbook · v0.3.7
Documentation
Everything from installing agno to shipping a site: content, frontmatter, templates, configuration, taxonomies, search, the CLI and the architecture.
This handbook covers agno 0.3.7. It starts with installation and then walks through the content model, the template system and the build pipeline. Each chapter stands on its own, but reading them in order is the fastest path if you are new.
agno is a content-first static site generator. It is not an application framework, a JavaScript island runtime, a bundler or a plugin system. That boundary is what keeps the binary small and builds predictable.
Installation
Install agno from a prebuilt binary, crates.io or source, and choose between the gnu and musl Linux builds.
Quickstart
Scaffold a new agno site in two commands, edit it with live reload, and produce a production build.
Project structure
What content/, templates/, static/, dist/ and .agno-cache/ do, which files a build produces, and how source paths map to URLs.
Content & Markdown
Sections, page bundles, drafts, slug and date rules, plus every supported Markdown extension and heading-ID behaviour.
Frontmatter
The complete reference for page, section and home-page frontmatter: title, date, tags, weight, slug, aliases, template and extras.
Templates
The MiniJinja template system: overriding the embedded theme, site and page context, filters, autoescaping and listing pages.
Configuration
Every key in agno.toml, the directory safety rules, menus, language, search and RSS settings.
Taxonomies
How tags and categories become term pages, overview pages and template variables.
Navigation
Menus, section ordering, previous/next links, pagination, tables of contents and active states.
Search
Generate search-index.json and wire a fast client-side search UI with no server and no dependencies.
Deployment
Build flags, base_url, output contents, static hosts, GitHub Actions, cache headers and a pre-deploy checklist.
CLI reference
Every agno command and flag: new, build, dev, check and clean, with output examples and exit codes.
Architecture
The build pipeline, source modules, parallel execution, fingerprints, the manifest and the safety rules behind incremental builds.
Benchmarks
Cold builds, rebuilds, memory and install size against Hugo, Zola and Astro, with methodology, caveats and reproduction steps.
Troubleshooting
Fixes for the most common agno errors: glibc, configuration validation, broken links, missing templates, dates and search.
FAQ
Short answers about what agno is, how it differs from other generators, and which features it deliberately leaves out.
Development
Build agno from source, run the test and lint suite, understand the source layout, and reproduce the benchmarks.
